Praying with Catherine McAuley
Best known as the founder of the Sisters of Mercy, Catherine McAuley's original intention was simply "to make some lasting efforts for the relief of the suffering and the instruction of the ignorant." Practical and creative, Mother McAuley began and employment agency for young women, a commercial laundry, and adult education program a poor school, and a small shop to sell the handiwork of the young women associated with her House of Mercy. Perhaps her greatest contribution to the church, however, is the spirituality that enlivened her mission of mercy - a fresh and fertile blending of the contemplative spirit and compassionate heart.
Helen Marie Burns, RSM, and Shelia Carney, RSM, are members of the Institute of the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas. Both have served in leadership positions in their regional communities and have written and lectured on Catherine McAuley's life and spirit.
"This excellent compendium of spiritually and prayer brings us closer to Catherine's oft-repeated ideal of being 'centered in God, for whom alone we go forward or stay back.' I recommend this book as a must for all Sisters of Mercy and for those who are Associates in Mercy throughout the world." M. Angela Bolster, RSM, Vice- Postulator for the Cause for the Beatification of Catherine McAuley, St. Maries of the Isle, Cork, Ireland
"To integrate contemplation spirituality and compassionate ministry in terms of the needs of secular society is both a perennial and timely challenge. The authors have carefully translated a rich heritage into practical application. All who are truly 'soul-companions' will be grateful for the 'comfortable cup of tea' this book provides for them." Gerard T. Broccolo, STD, Director of Leadership Development, Battle Creek Health System, Battle Creek, MI
